ILI provides all of the Spanish classes at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. Students from the 5-College community are welcome to join the semester classes as well as the Jan Term Intensive Course. ILI also provides an ILI Teaching Certificate through a 2-semester program at Hampshire College.

Fall and Spring Semesters

ILI offers 4 levels: 101 (First semester, first-year Spanish ), 102 (Second semester, first-year Spanish), 201 (First semester, second-year Spanish) and 202 (Second Semester, second-year Spanish). The courses are oral-based classes that meet twice a week for a total of 5 hours. For full course description visit https://thehub.hampshire.edu 

Jan Term Spanish Classes

These classes are the semester equivalent of the 101, 102, 201 and 202 classes that are taught over the period of 3 weeks every January. The classes are open to 5-college students and community members for a fee. The classes meet Monday - Friday from 9AM - 7PM. For a complete course description visit https://thehub.hampshire.edu

TESOL-CS-151 (Fall semester)

This course is an introduction to the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Students study a variety of approaches to language learning and are exposed to educational theory, applied linguistics, practical teaching ideas and curriculum development. Students also develop ESOL materials and experiment with them in class. In addition, learners observe 10 hours of classes at the International Language Institute in Northampton. This course is the first section of a two-semester teaching certificate.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Practicum (Spring semester)

This practicum is an continuation of the fall semester TESOL course (CS151).In addition to observing classes, learners plan and teach English classes to students at the International Language Institute. Two classes are observed and processed by the trainers. Monthly workshops highlight issues and questions arising in the classroom and meet on the following Wednesdays at 2:30: February 7, March 7, April 11 and May 2. Learners keep a teaching log and write a final paper on their growth as a teacher. Learners are also responsible for a final project: the presentation of a teaching point. This course is the second section of a two-semester teaching certificate.
