Program Description
This is an oral-based course that focuses on fluency. Classes are taught almost entirely in the target language. Due to the busy life of our students, we do not base our classes on homework assigned by the instructor, but do offer suggestions to practice target language in-between classes.
* We have yet to find the perfect text book so the notebook that ILI provides becomes your textbook. ILI supplies handouts and charts to help explain and reinforce grammar points, vocabulary development happens through in-class activities and on-going recycling of vocabulary.
* Our classes are based on student-feedback and at least once a week students will be asked to comment on what's working in the class and what additional activities students would like to see in class. Below is an overview of grammar covered in each level.
We offer 8 levels:
Level 1: Students should have little or no experience in the language. Students are introduced to basic grammatical structures (present tenses, present continuous, future (ir + a + infinitive) and one form of the past).
By the end of a 10 week course (30 hours) students should be able to communicate in verbal and written forms about personal information, daily activities, future plans, and some past experiences.
Level 2: Students beginning at this level should be able to understand and respond to very basic conversational situations. Students can use learned phrases, simple questions and statements and often can speak with some fluency in the present tense.
This class begins by reviewing structures covered in Elementary 1 working on fluency and accuracy. Additional grammar structures covered in this level include the preterit.
By the end of a 10 week course (30 hours) students should be able to communicate in verbal and written forms about personal information, daily activities, future plans, and past experiences.
Level 3: Students beginning at this level should be able to use the present, future (ir + a + infinitive), and preterit with some fluency and accuracy. This class begins by reviewing structures covered in E1 and E2. Additional structures introduced include the imperfect tense with an introduction to the present perfect.
By the end of a 10 week course (30 hours) students should be able to communicate in verbal and written forms about personal information, daily activities, future plans, and past experiences with more detail and confidence.
Level 4: Students in this level should be able to use the present, future, preterit and imperfect tenses with some fluency and accuracy.
This class begins by reviewing structures covered in levels 1, 2 and 3. Additional structures introduced are the subjunctive mood (I recommend that you be quiet) and compound tenses (I have eaten).
Level 5: Students are able to understand and express ideas in some detail on a variety of topics, have good command with structures covered in Levels 1-4.
In this class you are introduced to additional uses of the subjunctive beyond the basic and command forms.
Level 6: Students are able to understand and express ideas in detail on a variety of topics, have good command with structures covered in Levels 1-5 and awareness of all the different uses of the subjunctive.
This class reviews structure covered in levels 1-6 and introduces the conditional forms (If, could have, would have)
Level 7: Students are able to understand and express ideas in detail on a variety of topics, have good command with structures covered in Levels 1-6 and awareness of all the different uses of the subjunctive.
This level is for students who can use all grammatical structures that have been covered in levels 1-6 with increasing fluency and accuracy. This class continues fine tuning more advanced grammar including the subjunctive.
Level 8: Students at this level are at or near fluency in the target language.
This class focuses on mastering listening comprehension and conversational skills using materials aimed at native speakers in authentic situations.
